Capturing History in Flight: Documenting Auster Flypasts at Middlezoy Aerodrome
Our video production team recently had the privilege of documenting a remarkable day of vintage aviation at Middlezoy Aerodrome in Somerset to commemorate VE Day 80. The event featured a formation flypast by three historic Taylorcraft Auster AOP aircraft—wartime reconnaissance planes brought together in a stirring display of living history.
With cameras on the ground and in the sky, we captured the action from every angle—including from the cockpit of one of the Austers, a VE Day veteran that once served with the Royal Air Force. Flying again over the Devon and Somerset countryside and coasts, these aircraft carried a remarkable legacy.
The formation was later joined by two biplanes based at Middlezoy—beautiful replicas representing RAF aircraft from World War I and the interwar years of the 1930s. The sight of all these aircraft together in flight was both a tribute to mark VE and a testament to the dedication of the pilots and restorers who keep these machines airborne.
The day came to a fitting close with a warm chilli supper shared among pilots and guests at the airfield, followed by a spectacular flypast from the Royal Navy’s Swordfish and Bulldog aircraft, courtesy of Navy Wings.
It was a day of camaraderie, heritage, and flight—and one we were proud to help preserve on film.
